Fahrenheit 451 - An Overview

Is knowledge power? If it is, how does that power affect the human race? What if people could be convinced that limiting knowledge was actually for their own good?

Fahrenheit 451 is a classic work that paints the picture of a world where the suppression of knowledge is used to control people under the guise of happiness.

Fahrenheit 451 - What It’s About

In this dystopia, books are banned. The punishment for owning them is severe. Not only are books burned, but the houses they are found in is as well.

The ones whose job it is to track down and burn books are known as firemen. On one particular call, a fireman named Guy witnesses something that changes him forever. This event leads him to steal a book from a home before it can be burned. Soon, he begins wondering if what he has spent his life doing is right.

Fahrenheit 451 - What I Didn’t Like

This is a quick read and tells a great story, so it’s kind of hard to pinpoint anything I really didn’t like about this book. One thing that comes to mind is the ending. After reading the final page, I turned, thinking there was more. Nope. It just…ended. So, I guess I would say the ending was a little abrupt. Not bad, just sudden.

Fahrenheit 451 - What I Liked

This book is fantastic. From the characters to the setting to the dialogue, everything falls together in a way that just feeds the story to you. It’s so engrossing to watch a character question his own actions and begin seeing things more rationally.

Also, as a reader and writer myself, the subject matter really hit home. The suppression of creativity is a terrifying thought, but you don’t have to be a writer to be pulled into this. It’s a classic work for a reason.

Fahrenheit 451 - Conclusion and Rating

Do yourself a favor and read this. It pulls you in, and you won’t be ready for it to end. I was originally going to say this is a love letter to books, but I’m not sure that describes it accurately. I think it’s more of a love letter to ideas.

It’s a masterpiece!
